UnitedHealthcare ABA coverage, explained in plain English.

In-home ABA across central Maryland for families with UnitedHealthcare plans. We are out of network with UnitedHealthcare, and many UHC plans include out-of-network benefits for ABA. We verify yours for free and walk you through what your plan pays before anything begins.

The short answer

Does UnitedHealthcare cover ABA therapy in Maryland?

For most families, the coverage question has a good answer. Maryland insurance law requires state-regulated health plans to cover habilitative services for children, and the state's rules specifically name applied behavior analysis for children with autism. Many UnitedHealthcare plans sold in Maryland fall under that requirement.

The network question is the one to know up front: Terrapin ABA is out of network with UnitedHealthcare. Many UHC plans include out-of-network benefits that help pay for ABA after a separate deductible, often as a percentage of allowed charges, and self-funded employer plans write their own rules under federal law. Because the details depend on your plan, we start every family the same way: a free verification of benefits, where we check your exact plan and tell you what it pays before anything begins.

One wrinkle worth knowing: for many UnitedHealthcare plans, behavioral health benefits are administered by Optum. Your ABA paperwork may flow through Optum even though the card in your wallet says UnitedHealthcare. It changes nothing about your child's care; it only changes where the claims go, and we figure that out for you.

  • Free verification of your exact out-of-network benefits
  • We handle Optum when your plan routes ABA through it
  • Plain-English answers about what your plan pays, before the first session
What we handle

From verification to renewals, we run the process.

1

Free benefits verification

We contact UnitedHealthcare, or Optum when your plan routes behavioral benefits there, and confirm your out-of-network ABA benefits, deductible, and coinsurance. You get the answers in plain English before committing to anything.

2

Authorization

Many plans ask for approval even for out-of-network care. We prepare and submit the clinical paperwork your plan requires, first for the initial assessment and then for the treatment plan itself, and we follow up until it is resolved.

3

Claims, handled

We prepare and submit the claims paperwork for every session. On your explanation of benefits you will usually see CPT 97151 for the assessment, 97153 for one-on-one sessions, 97155 for BCBA treatment adjustments, and 97156 for caregiver training.

4

Renewals every six months

ABA authorizations run in six-month cycles. We track the dates, gather updated progress data, and file each renewal ahead of the deadline so care is not interrupted.

Questions, answered

What UnitedHealthcare families ask us.

Most plans cover ABA in some form. Maryland insurance law requires state-regulated health plans to cover habilitative services for children, and the state's rules specifically name applied behavior analysis for children with autism. We are out of network with UnitedHealthcare, so your family's share depends on your plan's out-of-network benefits. Many plans include them, and our free verification tells you exactly what yours pays before anything begins.
Optum administers behavioral health benefits for many UnitedHealthcare plans, so ABA requests and authorizations often route through Optum even though the card in your wallet says UnitedHealthcare. Nothing changes on your end. During verification we find out which entity manages your behavioral benefits and send the paperwork to the right place.
Often, yes. Many UnitedHealthcare plans ask for an authorization for the initial ABA assessment and another for ongoing treatment, even when care is out of network. We prepare and submit that paperwork for you, follow up until it is resolved, and keep you posted at every step.
It depends on your plan's out-of-network deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum, and those vary widely. We will not guess. Our free verification tells you what your plan pays and what would fall to you, before your child's first session.
